Curriculum At Lacon Childe School

At Lacon Childe School our curriculum is designed to support students’ academic success by promoting knowledge-based learning and is academically challenging and rigorous whilst also being inclusive and accessible, enabling all students to thrive at our school. The curriculum is designed so that students build progressive subject knowledge over time, especially supporting students to master language and number.

The range of subjects that we offer, and the thoughtful sequencing of content, which is cohesive and connected, linking concepts across subjects and units, ensures that our curriculum has both breadth and depth.

The purpose behind our curriculum is to ensure that students are able to thrive in the world as adults once they leave our school. We seek to promote students’ social, moral, spiritual and cultural development, and we also ensure that our curriculum is future-focused to equip students with the knowledge, skills and adaptability needed to thrive in an ever-changing, digital world.

Our Curriculum Design Features

Our curriculum is deliberately crafted to:

  1. Precisely specify core knowledge
  2. Ensure student success and accomplishment in every lesson is the norm
  3. Provide awe and wonder by ensuring that the Core knowledge is solid and embracing the Hinterland
  4. Ensure clear sequencing to demonstrate progression of knowledge and skills focused on vertical alignment (progression from one year to the next) and horizontal alignment (across subjects at the same level)
  5. Include regular opportunities for recap, retrieval and reinforcement of prior learning and revisiting of key concepts at increasing levels of complexity to reinforce understanding over time
  6. Strategically interleave topics, reinforcing key concepts over time to deepen understanding, strengthen connections between ideas, and enhance long-term retention
  7. Embed formative and summative assessments to monitor progress, provide feedback, reteach key content and guide/adapt future learning
  8. Be flexible and adaptable, ensuring students grasp and understand content, by allowing for adjustments based on students’ needs, emerging trends and evolving priorities without undermining the curriculum entitlement
  9. Encourage metacognition by teaching students how to reflect on their learning, set goals and self-regulate
  10. Have literacy as the backbone
