The RE curriculum at Lacon Childe is designed to offer a broad and balanced curriculum, to allow students to explore a diverse range of religions and to fit in with the requirements of Shropshire SACRE.
The common theme through the Religious Education curriculum is ‘influence’. It aims to provoke challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. We want students to understand how Religion impacts individuals, and society. Looking a local, national and global contexts. In turn developing an understanding of how societies religious and secular landscape is changing. Students will be challenged to question and understand how Religion influences individuals in their spiritual, and day to day lives. The curriculum is planned to build upon knowledge and skills year by year, helping to create Philosophical, and theological thinkers who have a clear understanding of ways to evaluate and analyse religions and moral ideas. The curriculum aims to equip students to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ.
Curriculum
We are proud of our RE and Worldviews curriculum and the contribution it makes to students’ personal development, cultural understanding and critical thinking. We encourage all students to participate fully in lessons and welcome open dialogue with parents and carers regarding any aspect of the curriculum. Where questions or concerns arise, we strongly encourage parents and carers to discuss these with the school so that we can work together to support their child’s education.
Parents/carers have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education (RE and Worldviews) and/or collective worship by writing to the Headteacher. If parents/carers are not satisfied with the handling of a request to withdraw their child from RE and Worldviews or collective worship, they should follow the school’s Complaints Procedure. The right of withdrawal does not apply to other areas of the curriculum where religious issues may arise naturally in discussion or are taught as part of other subjects, such as History, Citizenship or PSHE.
Through our PSHE curriculum, we aim to provide students with accurate, balanced and age-appropriate information, helping them to clarify their own values and attitudes, develop decision-making and communication skills, and understand the importance of healthy relationships, family life and parenthood. In accordance with statutory guidance, parents/carers have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from the non-statutory aspects of sex education delivered as part of PSHE by making a request in writing to the Headteacher. Parents can request withdrawal from the sex education components up until three terms before the child turns 16, after which the student can choose to opt back in. We encourage parents/carers to discuss any concerns with the school before making such a request, so that we can provide further information about the curriculum and its educational purpose.
